It's only been about nine days since I landed in Narita International Airport, but so much has happened that it feels like longer.
Right now I'm staying in a rented house in Midori, Chiba District, twenty or thirty miles southeast of Tokyo with two housemates. Brent has been in Chiba now for some time as a missionary for Mission to the World, and he teaches English and Bible classes at Oyumino Chapel throughout the week. Mark is a Filipino who spent his childhood in Tokyo, and attended college in the US. He is fluent in both English and Japanese.
As for myself, I am working as an intern with the Covenant Christian School International, primarily with the Jr. High class of eight students. CCSI has both an English and Japanese track for elementary school, but Jr. High and High school are done only in English, by a US homeschool curriculum. This is my first real exposure to anything homeschool, and I'm pretty impressed by it so far. The high school courses are primarily self-taught by the high schoolers, and the middle schoolers don't seem to need an awful lot of teaching either. All in all, CCSI seems very disciplined.
My daily commute is by bike. My ride is a rusty 1-speed, but it gets the job done. All the bikes here have dorky baskets on the front, and nifty locks in the back which lock between the spokes of the back tire. They wouldn't cut it back in the States, but out here they work well enough.
I'm afraid I don't have many pictures as of yet. I meant to get some the other day when my housemates and I visited Roppongui the other day, but I forgot my CF Card at home (deja vu). Here's what I got from around the house:
A view from my bedroom balcony, with IR filter.
The front of the house.
Some sort of reservation behind the house.
A view from my bedroom.
More to come. There exists a picture of my housemates and I, which I'll have to get from Brent.
I really like that last photo. How is the food?
