The Bad:
  • awkward intro
  • hard clipping. lots of it
  • cheap-sounding drum samples, especially the cymbals
  • inconsistent bass volume
  • no panning - conflict between treble tracks
  • not enough compression, especially on rhythm guitar track

The Good:
  • most of time, bass was very clear
  • tracks are in tune and in time
  • tremolo effect was nice

To fix the majority of these problems, the mixer could follow the guidelines documented in yesterday's post, Three Tips for Professional Mixing. Notice how the rhythm guitar is heard for the attack, and the attack only? It needs to be compressed. Do you hear the bass track become almost inaudible on the low notes? It also needs to be compressed. A bass boost with a cutoff of 100Hz might also help. Also, it seems like the ambient track (sounds like rhythm guitar with phase shifter) has been turned down a lot to accommodate the lead track. A little panning could easily fix this problem, and the ambient track could be turned up without losing the lead track, making a much richer sound. As far as the hard clipping goes, the mixer should compress every track and normalize each track to -3Db and all his clipping worries will be gone.
